Our plea for help

We rescued Sarge from our local shelter because his time was up there. He had come into the shelter a year ago (along with 2 other Pyrenees) as a stray with leg injury and when the owner was tracked down and came to pick his dogs up he stated he didn't want his dogs socialized and wouldn't take him to the vet to fix his leg. You see, Sarge was a working dog. The owner was also livid that the workers in the shelter would be around the dogs. The owner wanted no human contact for his herding dogs.

A few months later, Sarge was picked up again as a stray and brought into the shelter with his leg still crippled. Again, the owner came to pick him up and was furious that his dog was being socialized. Sarge loved being around people and now the owner felt he would be worthless as a working dog.

Well, it is now a year later and Sarge found his way back to the shelter again, and true to his word, the owner never got his leg fixed, so when his time was up we stepped in knowing the expense of such a task to try and undo the damage that a thoughtless owner would allow for over a year to poor Sarge. He is mobile and has adapted to not using his leg, but as you can see from his xrays, his injury to his knee and hip need to be addressed. Unfortunately to add insult to injury this sweet pup also has some hip displaysia.

Even with the enormity of the surgical expense and rehabilitation, we thought that the humanity of people would step in and help Sarge out once they saw what a great dog he is. Sarge is only 3-4 years old and has a wonderful life ahead of him and with just a little bit of help from those around him he will have that great life.

He will be available for adoption after we have been able to do what should have been done by a thoughtless owner that was supposed to have cared for his needs. I know many working dogs that are well loved and cared for by their owners. But it will now be more difficult (but not impossible) to fix an incorrectly healed leg and hip on a year old injury.
